What’s So Great About A Trampoline

Looking for a fun way to exercise and stay healthy? Doctors say that rebound exercising is one of the healthiest, safest kinds of exercise for your joints and heart. It’s aerobic, it’s fun, and it doesn’t put the same stress on your joints and tendons that impact exercise like jogging does. What’s rebounding? You probably know it better as ‘jumping on a trampoline’.

Trampolines for the garden or yard have become one of the hottest sports in the world. And why not? It’s great for you. You can do it alone or with others. You can use a trampoline to help you brush up on other skills - snowboarding, anyone? A trampoline in your back yard or garden is like having a gym right outside your door.

Alone or with others? Trampolining is a recognized Olympic sport, and was one of the official gymnastics events of the 2000 Olympics. It has been an official competitive sport since 1947, though it wasn’t recognized as one in the United States until 1967. Among the events that are held in official competitive trampolining and tumbling are Synchronized Trampoline in which two athletes perform identical routines on two trampolines, and the double mini-trampoline, in which one athlete performs on two mini-trampolines set at two different levels. Just think - a trampoline for your yard or garden could start your family off on the road to competitive success!

Even if you’ve got no ambitions to become a tumbling superstar, though, the health and fun benefits of having a trampoline in your yard/garden are clear.

To set up a trampoline, all you need is a backyard that is clear of obstruction around the width and height of the trampoline and for about 15 feet beyond. Trampolines come in many different sizes and styles to fit your space and your needs. Round, square, rectangular or octagonal, in sizes from 6 feet across to 30 - there’s a trampoline out there that’s perfect for your yard or garden space.

Rectangular trampolines are generally made of more durable materials than round ones because the design requires stronger materials. They have criss-crossed springs to draw the tension even, and create a uniform bouncing surface. You can buy rectangular trampolines in sizes starting as small as 10 feet in length.

By contrast, round trampolines have springs positioned around the perimeter and the tension tends to make a ’sweet spot’ in the very center. If you move out of the center, the focus of the tension shifts, making it harder to maintain your balance. The frame needed is lighter, and can be made of less expensive materials, making them cheaper to buy than other shapes.

There are special considerations if you’re buying a trampoline for the garden or yard for children to use. Pediatricians and children’s safety experts warn against allowing children to use standard trampolines for a number of reasons. These include the possibility of little fingers getting caught in trampoline springs, children falling off the edge of trampolines and children injuring themselves attempting tricks that they aren’t ready for. Because of those safety concerns, there are trampolines designed specifically for children that use a different style of spring, and accessories available to make trampolining safer for them. Among those are enclosure nets and non-slip surfaces.

How to Get Fit and Have Fun

When I was a kid my school P.E. lessons revolved around football, rugby or cricket and I hated them, notes to be excused were forged many times. When my parents divorced I joined a new school and the sports teacher was a bit more unconventional in his approach. He introduced us to Tug of war and P.E. became interesting It got a lot of us hooked so we even came back after school and weekends and we formed a team that took on local pub teams in fetes and carnivals.

That was a long time ago and work etc took over life and sports took a back seat. Several years ago I was on holiday in Devon and saw people flying kites on the beach. The kites they were flying had enough power to pull the flyer along leaving furrows in the sand. I knew I had to have a go on that. I bought myself a Flexifoil Pro Team 8 which was an 8 foot kite and started having fun. The 8 footer was changed to a 10 footer and then stacked with 2 more as I craved for more power and fun. I then discovered the power kite. These 4 line kites which are styled on para gliders or parachutes, these really opened up the sport side and before long I was kite buggying and kite land boarding. I was fitter and I lost over a stone in a couple of months without even trying to.

I enjoyed this alternative sport so much I opened up a shop selling kites and mountain boards. In doing this I found myself looking for other alternative or secondary sports to try.

Kite buggying is my favourite sport, it involves flying a 4 line power kite whilst sitting in a 3 wheeled kart which you steer with your feet. If you go for speed you can reach 70mph+ but you will need a lot of space. There are organised races all over the world including endurance races for teams of pilots. There is also a freestyle series now which involves strapping yourself into the buggy and attaching the kite via a harness, this enables you to fly much larger kites and the kite can then pick you and the buggy up to do 360 spins and many more tricks.

Kite land boarding is similar but you stand on a mountain board while flying the kite, this is more difficult in the initial stages but can be more rewarding as the freestyle is more achievable.

Stunt kites, trick kites, or sports kites are 2 line kites that can be controlled left or right by pulling the control lines. Since the Peter Powell kite of the 70’s they have come a long way in design and technology. Experienced flyers are doing tricks that amaze me. They can manipulate the control lines to cause the kite to wrap itself up in its own lines and then unwrap like a yoyo and still fly out afterwards; flat spins or stalls are common. They can make up teams where 2 or more flyers are doing tricks in unison and getting their lines tangled, only to do another trick and untangle themselves again.

Mountain boards are similar to snow boards but they have wheels so they can be ridden on a far more varied terrain. They can be ridden downhill for fun or in competition with others. They are also used for freestyle like snowboards and great height and style can be achieved.

Then I found the Frisbee, yes the humble Frisbee is a whole list of sports. The main one is probably “Ultimate” which is a cross between American Football and Basket Ball. It is played on a pitch similar in size to a football pitch with 2 end zones. The teams throw the Frisbee to their team mates and attempt to catch the Frisbee while standing in the opposition’s end zone. It is very fast moving and direction of play changes rapidly as if the disc is dropped it goes to the opposition. Ultimate is very exciting to watch and exhilarating to play. Disc golf is like normal golf but you throw a disc and not hit a little ball It can be played by anyone either on a proper course using baskets or a std golf course where hitting the flag is the aim. A course can be made on your local park by using trees, lamp posts or litter bins as targets. The Frisbee is great just to throw and catch and with LED technology can even be played at night.

Contained here is just a small sample of the alternative or secondary sports activities available through the right shop. When someone says “are you a sporty person” please don’t immediately say no, there is probably a sport available that you will thoroughly enjoy. Take a look around the internet or your local alternative sports shop and try something new.

This article was written by Alan Greenhill of http://www.kitensk8.com who is a mountain board instructor and has been involved with secondary sports since early 2003. Kite N Sk8 have board technicians trained by MBS who are the leading mountain board manufacturers and they also have their own teams who compete in the UK Championships for both mountain boards and kites. Please get in touch if you need help and we will be happy to assist. alan@gruntys.co.uk Thank you for reading this article.

Close Kept Secrets to Weight Loss Lesson #46

I was asked a question recently and thought I would pose the same question to you.

What monetary value do you put on your health?

Think about this. You put a monetary value on your home, on your car, on your furniture..all these things have a monetary value and yet they can be replaced.

Now, let’s look at your health. Is it irreplaceable?

I asked a friend this same question, and she said her health is priceless. Well, what exactly does priceless mean in the context of health.

Before we do this, let’s look at an heirloom which is considered priceless to many. Thus, it’s irreplaceable. You take care of that heirloom. You place it in a space that is protected. You focus on that heirloom with such profound love because you want it to last so you can pass it on to family members. The intent is this heirloom stays in wonderful condition in order to preserve its meaning to all the family who will care for it for years to come. We look at that heirloom and say this is a part of us and it has incredible value.

Well if our health is priceless, then shouldn’t we be treating it in the same respect as our heirloom? Shouldn’t we be preserving our health and loving our bodies so that our family gets the benefit of what meaning we serve in their lives.

Yet, how many of us actually do this on a conscious level?

Most of the population doesn’t take the time nor invest in themselves monetarily choosing those things that will affirm nurturing, love and protection for its most valuable heirloom - YOU! Giving to ourselves each and everyday and investing in those things that affirm health is the most valuable thing you can give your family.

Which would you rather give your family? A necklace passed down from your great grandmother or a healthy, vibrant YOU filled with love for yourself? Which one has more value to pass down from generation to generation?

I can speak about this as my mother died in 1987. I have my mother’s wedding rings that I will pass on, and they do have great meaning. However, I would choose to have a mother who knew how to love herself, who knew how to take care of herself so that I could have learned from her in how to do this for myself. What greater gift is there to pass on?

I spent many years in struggle not understanding how to love myself. It wasn’t just from my mother; it was from my father as well. Neither one of them knew how to love themselves.

Guess what? Now, I have learned how to do this, and am showing my daughter, Lindsay, what this looks like. She, in turn, is finding incredible value from this as she is understanding and taking action in how to do this for herself. As a 21 year old intelligent, beautiful woman, she does the following:

eats nutritious foods
exercises
surrounds herself with positive people
reads spiritual books
loves spending time with herself
gets massages
sees a Naturopathic doctor and nutritionist
sees a chiropractor
dates a young man who treats her with kindness
a senior at the University of Washington majoring in business, and regularly makes the Dean’s list

I am so proud of Lindsay. This picture of her would have looked much different if I hadn’t learned how to lead by example

So let’s go back to my original question. What monetary value do you put on your health?

My answer to this question is.over a million dollars. Thus, I choose to invest my money where I will get the greatest return and that is in myself and Lindsay to keep affirming loving ourselves. Look at this priceless gift that will be passed down to generations to come. Is it worth it? Every penny!

I think of the money that it cost me when I lived in struggle, the energy and the time. Then I have to figure in the monetary amount impact to everyone else when I didn’t love myself.

Protect and nurture YOU to pass down the value to your future generations.
