Why “Awareness Programs” Stink!

I am writing this article at the risk of stepping on a lot of toes! Hopefully you do not have a guilty conscience!

How many letters do you get in your mailbox every week from another awareness program either begging you for money or asking you to participate in an event to help raise awareness? The big ones are the Walks for Breast Cancer awareness, the American Heart Association walks, the American Diabetes Association walks, the Cancer Society, and the list goes on. Just about every foundation has some sort of event that they use for fundraising under the guise of raising awareness about whatever disease they support.

I have a fundamental problem with these events. While I believe that it is good to make people aware of these diseases, I often wonder where all of that money goes. Does it go to fund more useless drug research? Does it go to families that have been affected by these diseases?

What I am sitting here wondering is why is there no solution to these problems yet? Why are the rates of nearly all diseases at an all time high? No awareness of the real cure to these diseases yet? The current way of doing things is simply not working. With the billions of dollars poured into these organizations every year, there is no excuse for the cure to be unknown, yet somehow people still believe that there will be some miracle cure in convenient pill form for breast cancer.

It’s not gonna happen!

Save your money because the cure is simple and extremely inexpensive! For years, there have been doctors out there curing people of diseases like breast cancer, Type II diabetes, arthritis, heart disease, and all other forms of cancer. It is happening this minute as you read this. And no other cure has been found whose success rates even come close to those cured through the simplest cure of all, changing your lifestyle! According to the Surgeon General, 70% of all deaths by diseases are preventable through lifestyle change. My guess is that number is closer to 90%.

No one wants to hear this because, as with so many things, it is always about the money. Who cares about the thousands of women who die of breast cancer every year. This is a disease that can be prevented and cured through proper nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. So why don’t more of these organizations spend their precious dollars on educating people about the real reasons they get sick and the real methods that will cure them of these diseases?

How many more moms, sisters, daughters, and friends do we have to lose to heart disease or breast cancer before they will finally get the clue? How many more fathers, brothers, and sons will we have to watch suffer through prostate cancer or heart disease before people will realize that these awareness programs are just lining the pockets of a few people and allowing the rates of death to continue to climb?

Why do I feel like I am the only person upset about this? I don’t know how many of you are familiar with the story about how the Komen Foundation began. The beginnings are admirable, but I am sure that the founders expected the rates of death to decrease with the rise in awareness. So why haven’t the rates of death decreased? That is simple. Because their efforts have been misguided for many years by the interests of big food industries and the medical research community!

The truth is, if you will stop feeding yourself and your family nutrient-devoid processed foods, stop indulging in all of those dairy products, (whose manufacturers and marketers so kindly on one hand donate money to cancer research and on the other propagate the disease single-handedly), stop feeding your family meats that cause disease and are filled with saturated fat and cholesterol, then we can wipe these diseases off the face of the earth!

But apparently there is no money in the truth.

Start educating yourselves because there appears to be no foundation whose purpose is to find the truth and educate the masses about the truth. Their efforts are tainted with the stink of the dairy and meat industries money. Start searching for information to lead you to the truth. Don’t buy into the lies and deception of the big money drug manufacturers. There is not now, nor will there ever be, a lab technician smarter than our Creator. Look to Him for your miracle cures because He has provided us with them.

You can find a wealth of information on how to eliminate disease and lose weight through our programs offered from our website at www.takebackyourhealth.org. You can also search the work of Dr. John McDougall, and Dr. Joel Fuhrman. These individuals are changing lives, and curing people.

There is no reason for 70-90% of the diseases that plague our nation to exist. We have control. We have the control NOW! Today! Why should we keep paying for researchers to search for a magic pill while we watch our loved ones be wiped out by preventable diseases!

My advice to you would be, the next time you get a solicitation in the mail from anyone of these organizations is to send them a letter stating that you will be happy to support their organization when they start teaching the truth!

You have permission to publish this article electronically or in print as long as the bylines are included. Notification of print would be appreciated.

A Quick Guide to Asbestos and Health Issues

Unless you have been completely out of touch, you have probably heard all the hubbub about the dangers of asbestos. So, what is the big deal?

A Quick Guide to Asbestos and Health Issues

Asbestos is a fibrous material that is highly resistant to burning. It has a long history. While it was first used on a large scale commercial basis at the turn of the twentieth century, it has actually been around much longer. In fact, the ancient Egyptians were known for using it burial clothes.

Common modern applications used to include building materials, products and automobile brake pads, which all required a fire resistant element. Asbestos is still used today, but on a fairly small scope. The reason has everything to do with health. Asbestos in and of itself is not harmful to people. What is harmful, however, is asbestos dust.

Asbestos dust is a vicious thing. Due to the chemical makeup of the material, the dust is like a cloud of fine glass particles. While they will not damage your skin, they do great damage to the lungs. Making matters worse, asbestos dust is so fine that it is easily raised from asbestos material like ceiling tiles and walls. Once in the air, it is all but invisible. Prolonged exposure, such as when working on or in a building with asbestos materials, can result in massive amounts of the toxic dust entering the lungs.

Once asbestos dust is in your lungs, you cannot expel it by coughing. That doesn’t mean the body does not try. Asbestosis is scarring of the lungs from acid created by the body in an effort to get the asbestos dust out. If this process is allowed to occur for 10 to 20 years, the lungs may stop functioning because of excess scarring. If that sounds bad, it only gets worse. Asbestos dust can lead to terminal cancer in the form of mesothelioma. [What is Mesothelioma?]

Asbestos is an excellent fire resistant material that saves us from burning while killing us in a much slower manner. Since 1989, it has been banned in the United States in all but a few commercial areas.

Elder Mediation Solving Problems Before They Happen

My grandmother died last year. She passed away after an eight month stay in a nursing home, following a stroke that had taken her speech and much of her mobility. In the last months that she was alive, I witnessed my family scrambling to figure out what to do in case she would live that way for many years, while at the same time, hastily throwing together plans in preparation for her eventual death. In retrospect, much of the stress and disagreements that ensued might have been avoided if we had held a mediation session beforehand.

Before the stroke, my grandmother had also begun to exhibit symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, and I watched as this once spunky woman became troubled by her increasing inability to remember the simplest of things. She had never had to rely on anyone, having been the one to take care of everyone else, and my grandfather found himself becoming more and more her caretaker as the time went by. For the three years we knew the diagnosis, there was no coordinated sit-down among the family members to determine her feelings about what was happening to her, nor were there any proactive decisions as to what the future might hold regarding her care, although the family did check in regularly and monitor her progress. It took something exigent before any firm action was taken, and at that point it became a tremendous dilemma to solve.

Due to advances in medicine, heightened attention to diet, and desire to maintain an active lifestyle, people are now living longer than ever. (My grandmother, at 87, was still walking several miles a day just prior to her unexpected stroke.) But, in the blink of an eye, our lives can drastically change, and it is imperative that our wishes are made known to the people around us, so that they aren’t left guessing what to do if a life-changing event should occur. Mediation is a growing field of alternative conflict resolution that allows families to come up with their own solutions to their problems. Both sides meet with a neutral third party, called a mediator, who helps them to focus and spell out their agreements in a document termed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This document would be used in the future to execute necessary plans.

Elder mediation, in addition to a core mediator, often utilizes the services of trained professionals such as nurses and family therapists. Their presence helps to inform family members of options available and assists with the emotions that may arise. This collaborative environment, unlike an informal gathering at home where there may not be focus, allows for cooperative and deliberate decision-making, and, at the conclusion, ensures that delicate circumstances, should they occur in the future, will be handled with ease.

Whether you are an elder or the family of an elder, here are some of the things that are important to sort out through a mediation session:

If you are an elder, do you have a specific view about the way things currently are, and possibly know things about which your child/children may not be aware? If you are the child of an elder, do you have specific concerns about the health/mental state of your parent that you feel you need to address?

Are there any directives for a living will? If your life is being supported by a machine, is there a finite time period during which you would want to remain on that support? If you were to lose consciousness, do you want to be resuscitated?

If you are currently sick, do you have a vision for your treatment, and are there options that you do not wish to consider under any circumstance?

If you become incapacitated, what services would you need in order to live? Is there a desired nursing care facility you would want? Would you access private care? Would you move to the home of a child, sibling, or other friend/relative for care? Would you designate someone specific to make decisions for you on your behalf in the event that you were unable?

Who is responsible for payment of essential services? Would a portion be paid by Medicare, private insurance, personal savings, or the savings of the children, siblings or other friend/relatives?

If you should pass away, what are your wishes regarding funeral arrangements? Would you want to be buried, cremated, or possibly donated to science? It is crucial for those left behind to know now so that your desires may be followed.

Once an MOU is drafted, it can also be the starting point for legal documents such as a will or a living will; however, it is important to check the requirements for your specific state, either by investigating on your own or by obtaining the advice of an attorney, to make sure that all requirements are met to make your agreement legal and valid.

The time to devise solutions to the challenges you might face later in your life, or for the life of a loved one, is now. It is optimistic to think that families bond more strongly during times of crisis, but, unfortunately, chaotic events can often turn essential discussions into something contentious. Therefore, seize control of your destiny and make an appointment for mediation today.

Grassini is the Executive Assistant for IADR - The Institute for Advanced Dispute Resolution (http://www.advanced-resolution.com), a school which provides in-depth specialized training in mediation, including specific instruction in healthcare mediation techniques.
