Self-Evident Truth

My title this week was inspired by a post on Timothy Johnson’s “Carpe Factum,” and of course Timothy lifted his own title from the U.S. Declaration of Independence. A quick Google search on the exact phrase “We hold these truths to be self-evident” turned up roughly 802,000 results. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the Founding Fathers should be feeling pretty good about themselves by now.

I’m grateful to Timothy for reminding me this evening of these words, which I have pondered over and again. Framed as a question, they have formed the defining inquiry of my life for over a decade: “What are the truths I hold to be self-evident?”

I am not examining the question as one of choice, but rather as a guide to my unconsciously held beliefs. I have not been attempting to decide what truths I hold to be self-evident. I have been trying to see them.

While the solution may wax elusive the more we delve into it, the statement of the problem is simple: the truths we hold to be self-evident are truths we hold to be beyond question. They are self-evident. They are obvious. They are the simple facts of life–the ideas we take for granted. “The earth is flat,” was once such a truth, as was, “The sun revolves around the earth.” They are learned as a matter of course, presented throughout our lives as “fact,” not as hypothesis.

But what are our self-evident truths today? What revolutionary ideas lie just under the surface of the thoughts we can’t see?

The real difficulty with self-evident truth is that it appears self-evident to everyone else too. After all, if a lot of people were questioning it, it wouldn’t seem all that self-evident.

Great advances have been made in science by questioning the unquestionable. Galileo questioned the earth-centered universe. Einstein questioned the immutability of space itself. But I suspect that the greatest advances we will see over the course of this new century will be cultural advances, and they will come from questioning the truths we hold self-evident about humanity itself.

Or even more accurately, our greatest advances will come from questioning the deepest framework of our own thinking.

We tend to see the world through the concept of opposites. We may question whether a certain act is good or evil, whether a certain venture will succeed or fail, whether a certain child is intelligent or, um, not so intelligent–some “negatives” are considered too rude to voice–but we never question the framework of the analysis.

Buy what if there is no such thing as either success or failure, no such thing as either greed or selflessness, and no such thing as winners or losers?

We have begun to question certain of these oppositions independently. For example, psychologists and educators are turning to theories of “multiple intelligences” to better understand our individual talents and learning styles. And businesses are beginning to recognize a multitude of leadership styles, not just “leaders” and “followers.” But as a global culture we have made little headway into thinking about this dualistic structure of thought itself.

For those of you who are familiar with Buddhist teachings, I know what you’re thinking. Buddhists have been talking about the problems of dualistic thought for centuries. Zen Buddhists in particular are known for their “out of the box” koans. But I said we haven’t made much headway as a culture, and by that I mean the global culture of “modern, civilized” humanity.

There may be many different cultures around the world–and many different belief systems–but the “players” in the global economic game all have one thing in common: they believe in winning and losing.

The “winners” are quite pleased about winning–even if they do suffer the stirrings of guilt from time to time–and the “losers” are mad as hell about losing, as witnessed in violent outbreaks throughout the world on a daily basis. But they all believe in the dualistic concept. Because the cultures that don’t believe in winning and losing don’t play the game.

Unfortunately, because they aren’t playing the game, we don’t hear a lot about them, and these cultures have a frightening tendency to disappear whenever they are found to be inconvenient by the player mentality. They are the indigenous peoples around the world: the aborigines of Australia, the tribal peoples of North and South America, the hunter-gatherer cultures of Africa. And without exception they are being displaced, assimilated, or simply killed off by the day.

The worst of the tragedy is that it’s so predictable. When someone seeking to win comes up against someone who doesn’t even understand the game, the player gets to win every time. It’s like the new guy at the poker table, but on a global scale.

So what we’re left with are the cultures that are founded upon dualistic thought. With no one around to challenge that thinking, thought transmutes magically into fact, and our ideas about success and failure, winning and losing, and even good and evil become reality.

What I love most profoundly about the Declaration of Independence is its bold statement of self-evident truth. Those who penned the Declaration brought forth their truths into the light, where those truths could be challenged, questioned, and ultimately accepted as our most tightly held beliefs.

What we need today is a new Declaration–a global Declaration–of self-evident truth.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that in the pursuit of happiness we shall all compete against each other for the rights of the Victors, and that among these rights are counted the right to rewrite history to favor the Strong, the right to suppress the weak, and the right to withhold the spoils of Victory from even the most desperate among our own kind, such right deriving naturally from the Victorious right of Possession.

“We hold furthermore that the entire realm of nature, from which Humanity is rightfully excluded and over which Humanity divinely presides, has no inherent rights whatsoever, and that any privileges extended to nature by Humankind shall derive directly from those Human needs which may arise naturally in the direct and immediate interest of Humanity’s own survival.”

I could go on…

It’s ugly, I know. But until we face up to our own self-evident truths–all of our self-evident truths–we will not begin to question them. The very foundations of thought itself will remain inviolable, and we will continue to create the reality to which this thinking inevitably leads.

How To Improve Your Memory By Up To 10 Times With Memory Techniques

I’m writing this article to inform you about memory techniques. When applied correctly they are so powerful that can improve your memory many times. Don’t worry, they have nothing to do with your mind - they are just tricks how to better remember information.

Memory techniques are very simple. The best part - they can be applied in just minutes. Memory techniques go deep in the history - even ancient people used them. They were especially used by ancient orators to remember long speeches.

Think about it. How could someone remember a two hour long speech without memory techniques? I couldn’t and I think you couldn’t either. But with memory techniques everybody can do that. Doesn’t matter how bad you think your memory is - you CAN remember a two hours long speech with memory techniques.

You probably have watched memory experts on TV performing mind blowing memory stunts like memorizing phone numbers or names of 400 people audience. You can do that, too - when using memory techniques. Actually it’s very doable.

Memory techniques can improve your life in many ways. You can remember more with them, cut your learning time and never forget things you need to remember. You can also impress your friends with your excellent memory and get a raise in salary at your workplace. There are many ways in life how memory techniques can be applied.

In this article I’m going to give you some hints how to use memory techniques to make things easier to remember. I will only explain each thing in one sentence just to give you general idea. I won’t explain each memory trick in detail because there isn’t so much space in this article. When you use memory techniques you completely eliminate rote memory. No rote memory is needed - only imagination. The best part - remembering things with memory techniques is interesting and you have extra motivation to do so.

Remembering shopping lists or long list of items with memory techniques is a breeze. What you need to do is associate each item with the next one in the list. You need to associate the two items in some unusual way that stays in your mind.

Remembering numbers: with memory techniques you can remember long digit numbers in minutes. The trick is to convert numbers into words. There is a special phonetic alphabet with 10 sounds - one for each number. No number is too hard to remember when you apply this technique.

Knowing how to remember numbers is a huge advantage. You can remember telephone numbers, style numbers and prices in minutes. No more taking notes, now you can keep telephone numbers in your mind.

Remembering people names: with memory techniques it’s a very doable task. The trick is to associate each persons name with his face. Each time when you see a persons face you will remember his name. To do so you need to find one unusual feature of the persons face and associate it with persons name.

Remembering everyday details: have you sometimes forgot where you left your car keys or in which pocket do you keep money? With memory techniques you can completely eliminate this problem. The trick is to be originally aware - concentrate on what you are doing and you’ll never forget a thing.

Memorizing long speech: with memory techniques this can be done in minutes. The trick is to give keywords for each paragraph or logical part of the speech and then link the keywords in a list. This way you will always know about what to talk.

Memorizing foreign vocabulary: with memory techniques memorizing sophisticated foreign words is very doable. The trick is to substitute the foreign word with a word in your own language that sounds similar. Then associate the meaning of the foreign word to the substitute word. This way you’ll be able to remember even the most sophisticated foreign words really fast.

Remembering weekly appointments and meeting times with memory techniques is a very doable task. The trick is to associate the meeting with the time of the day. This may sound quite confusing when expressed in one sentence but is very doable when you know how to do it.

Remembering anniversaries and historical dates: again it can be done with memory techniques. The trick is to associate the historical date with the event. It can be done when you know how to remember numbers. Again, it may sound confusing when said in one sentence but is very doable when you know how to do it.

As you understand, memory techniques can make you life much better. With them you don’t need to struggle to remember vital information. You can apply memory techniques and remember everything effortlessly and much faster.

Another Reality TV Show or a Reality Check

Quote of the month: *The secret weapon for success is knowledge, so what you don*t know can hurt you. - Geela

These days there is a growing trend towards reality TV shows that are based on external shallow values. With the appeal of junk food, it has a powerful hypnotic effect even on the strongest minds. But while reality TV may seem like a harmless form of entertainment, the damage (which is done so subtly) is very powerful and therefore it deserves a closer look. So the question is *Do we really need another reality TV show or perhaps it*s time for a reality check?*

The popularity of reality TV shouldn*t come as a surprise considering the fact that we live in a culture that worships vanity, rather than virtue, and lives by the mantra of *He with the most toys lives,* rather than *He with the most joys lives.* It*s been said that circumstances don*t make a man, they only reveal him. Likewise, reality TV is merely a reflection of what our society has become - a materialistically driven society where the love of power and money overcomes the power of love. It*s a reflection of a society that is not only devoid of a solid wholesome value system, but is also separated from spiritual roots. It*s also a culture that thrives on living on the edge, characterized by thrill-seeking and addictions (including the addiction to stimulation).

So here is the true reality behind reality TV. Reality TV, which is in the business of making us feel good rather than be good, actually contributes to the growing problems in our society by celebrating human weakness rather than human excellence. Reality TV doesn*t empower us, but rather overpowers us by taking our innate power and inner knowing and spirituality away from us, leaving us feeling insecure, inadequate, less fulfilled, isolated and confused by virtue of the promotion of anti-social behavior, excessive self-indulgence, self-entitlement, greed, compromised integrity, obsession with winning at all costs, and erosion in morality.

When you consider the magnitude of the challenges that are facing America today, it becomes obvious that what we need is certainly not another mind-numbing reality TV show, but rather a good reality check. Whether we recognize it or not, America is in desperate need of healing and true revival. It needs a jump-start, not only in the economy, but most importantly a jump-start in the spirit. After all, we are only as strong as our spirit, because when the spirit is weak it*s easier to become overwhelmed by what life throws our way. But when the spirit is strong, no turbulences can effect us, much like a ship in the vast ocean that can sail smoothly as long as there are no holes in it to make it sink.

America could use a reality check if only to reexamine our value system, which is out of balance and has led to social ills and failing systems and institutions. In a conflicted state of uncertainty, doubt and fear, it*s only natural for people to feel overwhelmed, wishing to escape from reality. However, reality TV proves only an artificial relief. It*s obvious that we are looking for love (real joy, fulfillment, meaning and purpose) in all the wrong places. In a culture that demands instant gratification, and relief from everyday anxieties, a quick fix (for coping), seems to be the chosen drug of choice.

So now for that reality check. The reality is that the prevailing mentality in American society today is *more is better,* acquiring external riches as opposed to internal riches and that you can get something for nothing. There is a sense of entitlement and an expectation of wanting the good life without having to work hard for it. This is reinforced, glorified and perpetuated by the media with shows like *The Lifestyle of The Rich and Famous.* When all you see is glamour, but not the hard work and sacrifice that goes into achieving success, it only inspires more envy and the desire for a *get rich quick* scheme leading to the erosion of morality and integrity.

From environmental pollution to spiritual pollution, we can no longer ignore our failing systems and institutions. From an Enron economy with ballooning budget deficits (which is really a reflection of a deficit in integrity) and a vanishing social security system (which creates social insecurity) to politicians doing what*s politically correct instead of what*s in the best interest of the community, to a failing education system as reflected in poor test scores which lag behind those of other nations, to the break-down of the family system (where kids find themselves home alone growing up with their peers, gangs or TV without nurturing parents to instill in them solid wholesome values system), we are planning to fail by default.

Our spiritual bankruptcy is evident practically in every facet of our lives, resulting in social ills from perversion, to the phenomenon of people going from being heroes to zero. We can no longer ignore the senseless violence in our schools and crime on our streets, increased teen suicide (often due to hopelessness, low self-esteem, lack of direction and a solid, wholesome value system) and substance abuse. Americans are more stressed out today than ever before despite the fact that we have the highest standard of living in the entire world. The true reality is that America is going, slowly but surely, from being a nation of producers and innovators to a nation of insatiable consumers (even the holidays are too commercialized to enjoy) while drowning in debt just to support a lifestyle we can*t even afford. All of these problems can be traced to the pursuit of materialism, which is a by-product of the American Dream.

But rather then play the *blame game,* it*s far more productive to approach the reality TV issue in terms of what you can do to improve your own life. A reality check is a good starting point. Remember, the true spirit of the American Dream was all about perspiration, innovation, risk and reward with the focus on a wholesome values system, integrity, a strong work ethic, community and being of service. All of which creates total prosperity (from health to wealth) with purpose, meaning and real joy. Now that*s a reality worth striving for!
